Welcome to our hive right here in the heart of Newark, New Jersey! Apiary in the Sky, LLC originally "Arkhive" was founded in 2020 as a response to various health risk factors in the city. Cities are often centers for pollution, poor air quality, contaminated soil and many other environmental issues that affect the quality of life for residents.
Utilizing the City of Newark's "Adopt-a-lot" leasing program, we convert vacant lots into apiaries, urban farms, and pollinator gardens for $1 a year per property. This has not only allowed us reverse years of systemic neglect and decay, but also replace it with rich ecosystems that repair the land with potential to heal our communities. By 2025 we project to have at minimum 25 beehives spread throughout the five wards of Newark.

Apiaries are places where 3 or more beehives are kept. Apiary comes from the Latin words for bee, apis, and place of, arium. In English, Apiary means “place of bees”.
Environmental Conservation
Urban areas are often centers for pollution; from litter to poor air quality. We exist to mediate these risk factors through physical redevelopment, detoxification, and community asset mapping
Apiary Youth Academy
We collaborate with various schools, nonprofits, and institutions to deliver bee-friendly programming. We offer a variety of workshops from raising awareness of the importance of pollinators like native bees to honey-tastings and more!
Food Sovereignty
Food and proper nourishment are essential to maintaining a balanced diet and optimal health. Not only do we train residents on how to grow their own food, but we also make food available through our fridge program and community distribution days.

Beekeeping in Black Communities
Through time black and brown people on a widespread have been estranged from nature. Every popular city in the United States has a thriving black population that drives their economy. Yet, despite the commerce and business that these cities generate, many black communities live in substandard conditions compared to our counterparts. To combat the layered, complex social issues that exist in many urban areas we have instituted a holistic approach to community healing. Using honeybees, a vital asset as a lane within agriculture to inspire stewardship and mend ties with the land.
The benefits of urban farming, beekeeping, and sustainability include:
More access to nutritious, affordable food and medicine
Remediation of poor soil, water, and air quality
Improved community identity and mental health
Deterrent for crime and illegal dumping
Social enterprising and economic opportunities
